Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, at Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of art by DuVernay's aunt Denise at the age of a small child. Her aunt worked the night shift as a nurse to ensure she could indulge her passion for art literature and theater throughout the day. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay discovered through her example that art could be an effective tool for social change. DuVernay was also taught by her mother, who had a social conscience, and encouraged DuVernay to be creative and express herself through art. DuVernay was a summer resident of Lowndes County Alabama, where DuVernay's father was born, and brought up. Her father, who was DuVernay's dad, reminisced iconic civil rights demonstration on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring city of Selma Alabama. DuVernay's time in Alabama's Selma would inspire her later to make a film about Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. She attended University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English and African American Studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in television journalism during her time as a college student. She started as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being assigned to look over the residence of one member of the jury and examine their junk. Her duties left her unhappy with journalism so she decided to move towards the publicity industry. DuVernay began her work as a junior publicity assistant at a small film studio following her graduation from college. She was promoted to the position and set up her own public relations company called The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Her agency launched a number different lifestyle and promotional networks, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
