Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, was raised in Long Beach California. DuVernay was raised by her Aunt Denise and her mother, who pushed DuVernay to pursue her artistic talents and be attracted by art. Aunt Denise worked the night shift in the role of a nurse so that she could pursue her love for art literature and theater during the day. DuVernay was a fan of the movie West Side Story, which she taught her. DuVernay realized through the example of her mother that art could be an effective tool for social change. Her mother, too, was conscious of social issues and taught that she could express her thoughts through the arts. DuVernay lived in Lowndes County Alabama, where her father was born and brought up. The DuVernay's father was a witness to the civil rights protests on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close-by town Selma in Alabama. DuVernay's time in Selma, Alabama was the inspiration she used to produce a film on the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. She enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles to earn degrees in English in addition to African American Studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in broadcast journalism as a student. She started as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was assigned to sit at the home of one member of the jury as well as take a look at their trash. In the aftermath of being dissatisfied in journalism and the jobs she was given, DuVernay determined to make a move in publicity. DuVernay was brought on straight after college, as an intern at one of the smaller studios. Then she founded The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999.
